Efforts aimed at creating an Animal Welfare and Conservation Society in Liberia started in 2000. The campaign methodology to address the stray dog situation consisted of outreach visits to a number of pet owners and residents in Monrovia and other parts of Liberia. These efforts also included educating locals about the importance of saving their country’s wildlife and forests. With these efforts set into motion, Liberia Animal Welfare and Conservation Society (LACWS) was established in late 2001. It is now the only local animal welfare organization in the Republic of Liberia.
Liberia doesn’t have a veterinary school. They are empowering animal science students and instructors of Lofa County Community College & Cuttington University in animal welfare and health programs through theoretical and regular hands-on field practice. The program builds the capacity of the students in animal welfare and basic veterinary skills and knowledge.
